What is the Olympics CCTV Monitoring?   -   10 Jan 2012

The well known TV show “Big Brother” has encouraged the general public to believe that CCTV is extremely intrusive, because each CCTV camera is actually being constantly monitored by a dedicated surveillance specialist. In real life, the fact is that there is only ever a small handful of people available to watch 100s and on many occasions 1000s of CCTV cameras at any one time.

For events such as the Olympics and World Cups, the Pan, Tilt, and Zoom (PTZ) camera is still being commonly used by the remote CCTV surveillance operator, to protect people and assets in open space areas. This is not all good news for the criminal and bad news for the public, as many PTZ camera installations around the world are now being transformed from reactive infrastructure-dependent CCTV, to proactive independent security assets. This is being achieved using Viseum UK’s patented surveillance technology, which produces the only PTZ camera installations in the world to optimise the key human element of CCTV surveillance, by providing greater CCTV coverage from fewer PTZ camera installations, and collecting more close-up evidence without any CCTV operators being present.

There are many reasons why Viseum’s technology came to fruition and why its camera solutions have grown in popularity all through the international recession. The key benefit of this technology is to provide intelligently automated CCTV monitoring local to the PTZ camera which doesn’t depend on anything else to protect the remote site.

Today’s CCTV technology Although the trained CCTV security consultant still commonly specifies the PTZ camera for open space CCTV monitoring, knowing they need to be constantly controlled and watched to deliver results, until now it has been the only practical CCTV camera device capable of capturing information to react in emergencies or produce evidence needed to convict. At the other extreme of the operator being presented with too much data, the HD or megapixel camera hasn’t been able to compete due to its limited coverage, along with the massive transmission bandwidth and storage capacity required.

With this in mind, it’s obviously unfair but not surprising, that it has been said that less than 1% of the current monitored and unmonitored CCTV installations ever deliver results.

It is also a fact that due to the financial climate the high security conscious end user is now taking a much harder look for much greater value before they spend. In fact the latest reports on buying trends reveal these buyers are now spending much more wisely. Very few are purchasing the previously usual lowest priced solution and the majority are investing in security innovation. This is most certainly the direct cause of the many large “box shifters” of the security industry now going out of business.

Today’s manned guarding services With the harsh reality of costs needing to be reduced but the call for service levels to increase, the absolute trend throughout the manned guarding security sector is for end users wanting to use CCTV security to replace their 24/7 guards. However with current technology it is not surprising that until now many users have been reluctant to do this. But having said this; how often have large secured outdoor sites ever benefited from their guards’ monitoring the CCTV camera system, and capturing close-up forensic video evidence of the actual moment the site was damaged and goods stolen? Events like this usually happen within just a few carefully planned seconds, so has standard CCTV ever captured quality images identifying the criminals committing the crime, and even if they were wearing masks, has the video evidence ever been sufficiently conclusive to secure a conviction? Everyone knows that when standard CCTV systems have achieved just this, it has been such an extraordinary event that it made headline news!!  Enter the Intelligent Moving Camera (Viseum IMC) All these are legacy issues, which have now simply gone away. The problems around CCTV monitoring coverage, surveillance staff availability or fatigue, video image transmission, video storage and even concerns around privacy, have all vanished with the Viseum Intelligent Moving Camera (Viseum IMC). Its technical performance and reliability is giving high security conscious people the confidence to start benefiting from electronic security and with an enhanced level of security service.  The Olympics CCTV monitoring and other high profile events should naturally use this type of technology, however many events just like this around the world are no doubt using the PTZ camera, but are their CCTV monitoring systems benefiting from this latest best-in-class innovation?
